How can you help Beyond the Ball?

There are many ways to support our mission:

Storage Space

Our programs involve quite a bit of equipment, which needs to be stored when not in use. If you have storage space we can use, let us know!

Dollars

Gym space is costly. So are the materials we purchase for our programs. We would be grateful for your support. Checks can be made out to "beyond the ball" and sent to:

Items

You probably have something to give that appeals to youth between the ages of 5 and 24. Tickets to events, like Bulls games; a summer home that we could use for a leadership retreat; or sports equipment and apparel. Send us an e-mail at btb@beyondtheball.org to let us know.

Beyond the Ball Girls

Beyond the Ball recognizes that girls and young women are often left to sit on the sidelines, while the young men get attention through sports. Girls are not only a part of all of our programs, we have a specific program just for them.

tournaments (ages 10-24)

Beyond the Ball regularly runs basketball leagues and tournaments at multiple locations in our target areas. Typically, these tournaments build on the relationships created during open gym times.

league play

Beyond the Ball has a preferred approach to league play that allows participants to have greater levels of commitment and ownership. The participants not only play; they select their teams in a draft. Captains quickly learn that choosing the best team does not necessarily mean choosing solely the players with the most talent. The more experienced captains have learned to draft based on the skills and personalities they need to create a successful team that will work together to win.

League typically run over the course of two-three months, with a regular season schedule that involves each team playing each other multiple times. Teams are then seeded according to the standings, and a tournament is played to determine the league champion.

all-stars and awards

An all-star game is held midway through each league. The participants in the league vote for two of their peers from each team to select the all-star game participants, and each all-star receives a t-shirt to commemorate their achievement.

A three-point competition and 2-ball contest are also held at the all-star game, with winners receiving trophies.

Awards are also given out at the end of each tournament for the following categories:

day tournaments

Beyond the Ball also occasionally runs day tournaments, usually as part of a larger event. Typically, an event like this involves teams who create their roster and register ahead of time, and beyond the ball facilitates the tournament on the day of the event. Often times, these take the form of a 3-on-3 tournament with round-robin play to determine seeding, followed by a playoff to determine a champion.
